Before The Secret came out, one of my early clients for book publicity turned out to be a magician.

Scott Lewis knew everyone in Vegas because he was the chiropractor to the stars. Through him, I got to meet Lance Burton and Marshall Brodein and other legends of magic. Thanks to Scott, I attended my first ever magic convention. It was in Vegas. Stars of my youth were there, like Mark Wilson. And a truly charming man by the name of John Booth was there. I’ll never forget meeting him.

“Are you a magician?” Booth asked me.

He had the old school good looks of early Hollywood. His smile lit up the room. His eyes were focused on me. He was truly present. Despite the crowds of people around us, John Booth made me feel like I was the most important person at the event. He asked for my business card and I handed it to him. He studied it a moment.

“May I keep this?” he asked.

You have no idea how flattering it was to have this living legend of magic ask if he could keep my card. Obviously business cards are made to be dispersed. I had plenty. But the fact that he asked made me and my card feel important.

I collected every book by John Booth. I will always remember him and his unexpected kindness to me.
